“Where is SailCare?” We get asked this question time and time again. Here is an explanation of where we are and where people in this part of the country go sailing.
Near Moraine State Park
SailCare is located 40 miles NW of Pittsburgh on the Allegheny River. While sailing is very limited on the river, 45 miles west of our town is Moraine State Park, home to Lake Arthur. The park is nestled in a valley that was once blighted by coal mining and oil and gas drilling and is one of our nation’s finest examples of environmental reclamation. A number of one-design fleets with active racing and social activities call the lake their home. The Lake Arthur Sailing Club, a family sailing club with a full menu of activities, makes its home at Davis Hollow Marina.
Convenient to Lake Pymatuming
Another hour north from Lake Arthur you will find Pennsylvania’s largest lake. Lake Pymatuming cover over 17,000 acres and sits mostly in PA but crosses over into Ohio at it’s western edge. The Century Club sits in a quiet cove overlooking the lake. It’s a great family sailing club with its own club house with showers, great kitchen and facilities for indoor eating and entertaining, docks, moorings, dry storage, small beach, picnic tables, covered deck and 24/7 caretakers who live on the site. Up the lake from the Century Club is the home of the Pymatuming Sailing Club, which is geared toward racing, instructions, and a good Jr. program.
An easy drive to Erie, PA
Another hour north and you will be in Erie, PA. Drive by the harbor situated in the bay behind Presque Isle and you will find the Admiral Perry Yacht Club and an excellent public marina. It’s easy to see that Erie is proud of its marine heritage – the whole area is marine oriented and on almost any day during the season the bay is full of sailboats. With access to open water on Lake Erie, here you will find boats of all sizes, from 14′ up. Erie is a great place to visit.
